In 1906, Robert Baden-Powell (BP), a lieutenant general in the British Army, wrote a book for boys about reconnaissance and scouting. Baden-Powell wrote Scouting for Boys (London UK), based on his earlier books about military scouting, with influence and support of Frederick Russell Burnham (Chief of Scouts in British Africa), In the summer of 1907 Baden-Powell held a camp on Brownsea Island in England to test ideas for his book. This camp and the publication of Scouting for Boys are generally regarded as the start of the Scout movement.
Scouting is an educational movement and program that aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the survival skill
Air Scouts are members of the international Scouting movement with a particular emphasis on an aviation themed programme and/or flying-based activities. Air Scouts follow the same basic Scouting program as normal Scouts, but they devote certain amounts of time focused on their aviation activities.
Air Scouts often wear a slightly different uniform from the rest of the Scouting movement and/or may have additional badges.
Most aviation activities are ground-based like visits to airports, air museums, radio controlled model flight, airplane modelling etc.
There are claims that Major Baden Fletcher Smyth Baden-Powell, youngest brother of the founder of BP, Robert Baden-Powell and an aviator, first brought flying-based activities into Scouting. However, as late as July, 1932, Baden Baden-Powell wrote:
"...it has been suggested that Air Scouts should be organized in the same way as Sea Scouts."
"Though the air is 'ever with us', access to aerodromes is not common and though Sea Scouts can mess about 'in any old boat', a Scout is unlikely to be able to get access to an airplane, and even if he did he would not be able to fly it. ...it seems hardly feasible to have special 'Air Scouts', yet a great deal may be accomplished by troops specializing in air-work... I shall always be pleased to give what advice I can."
On my honour, I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the Queen
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law
1. A Scout is to be trusted.
2. A Scout is loyal.
3. A Scout is friendly and considerate.
4. A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts.
5. A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
6. A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
7. A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.
Originally, Baden-Powell intended for Scouts to salute each other in greeting when they first saw each other for the first time using the "secret sign", or half-salute. This was regardless of whether the Scouts knew each other or not. Officers, such as Patrol Leaders, Scoutmasters, or members of the armed forces, were to be saluted with a full-salute. Full salute is also required at playing of national anthem.
The World Scout badge is the emblem of the World Organization of the Scout Movement and is worn by Scouts and Scouters around the world to indicate their membership. The Scout badge means that a Scout can point the right way in life as truly as does a compass in the field. There are two stars on the badge. They symbolize “Truth and Knowledge”. The shield stand a Scout's readiness to defend that freedom. The symbol for north on maps, and a Scout was to show the way in doing his duty and helping others - became symbols for Service to Others, Duty to God, and Obedience to the Scout Law.
In 2017, there are over 40 million registered Scouts and as of 2007 and 10 million registered Guides around the world, from 216 countries and territories.
